I guess I have to relearn physics

Kerbal Space Program left beta status yesterday. With that update came a number of significant enhancements, changes and new features.

And they changed aerodynamics and physics.

New reentry effects. Smoking hot graphics there!

Yup, Jeb died on reentry. Back to the basic missions to figure this out.

Oh. That was unfortunate.

When the Stars Align

Today was a pretty normal day for the most part. Took Selena in for a quick checkup vet visit. Went to work and audited an advanced Excel class (that I’ll be teaching soon).

Regular, normal stuff.

Except when you apply a ‘space’ layer to the day.

Driving home from the clinic with Selena, I heard Go! – a very cool music / archival audio mashup by Public System from their new The Race For Space album. Video below.

Then also noted that Sid Meier’s Starships is due out for iOS. Yes, video below. iTunes link when it’s live on iTunes.

And finally also noted that Buzz Aldrin’s Space Program Manager is ALSO out tonight for iOS. Yes, video ALSO below.

Of course, it’s a silly thing to think that I’d not be picking up all three. Only problem is that this will cut in to my Kerbal Space Program time 😉

A Classic Dungeon Crawling Silent Auction – for charity!

Thanks to the kind friends at Beamdog I’m able to up the ante for incentives to my sponsors of my 24hr game-a-thon participation in Play4Paws2 – supporting CaliCan Rescue Foundation.

Butt Kicking, for Goodness!

Baldur’s Gate. Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Icewind Dale. These games hold a special place in my heart. I was at the Edmonton Baldur’s Gate launch party when I was covering it for local TV news. Then later, when I worked for BioWare, I contributed to the marketing and communications efforts of these games and the Infinity Engine that they’re built on.

At the time, there was absolutely nothing else that could bring the true D&D experience, the party-dungeon-crawling-holy-crap-is-that-a-Beholder experience to the computer as these games did.

So, through the help of Beamdog, I’ve got copies of the Enhanced Edition versions of these games. And Virginia, they are enhanced – for example, the Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition:

Running on an upgraded and improved version of the Infinity Engine, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition includes the entire Baldur’s Gate adventure, the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack, and never-before-seen content including a new adventure and three new party members: the Calishite monk Rasaad yn Bashir, Neera the wild mage, and Dorn Il-Khan, the evil blackguard.

I want my BGII and so do you!

Here’s how you can support my fundraising efforts through a silent auction and get one of these amazingly engaging and challenging Dungeons & Dragons world games, specifically:

The silent auction is over at a Facebook event page. The rules of the auction are pretty simple:

  • The auction will be live until I’m done my 24hr game-a-thon at 7pm on February 28th.
  • I’ve created one post per item available.
  • Bid by placing a comment in the item you want to bid on.
  • Highest bid at the time I finish gaming on the 28th claims the auction item.
  • I’ll inform auction winners via FB message and/or reply in the relevant auction.
  • After you’ve been notified, place your contribution at the Play4Paws2 donation page at CanadaHelps.org – https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/play4paws2-this-time-its-fur-sonal/
  • I’ll forward the winner’s details on to Beamdog – they’ll contact you regarding claiming your game through Beamdog.

Simple no? So why are you still here and not over there bidding!

Thanks for your support, and see you online on the 27-28th. I’ll need your support and encouragement then too, either through Facebook, Twitter, or maybe even through a livestream… stay tuned!

Goodbye Apple. Hello Alberta School of Business!

I guess it’s about time I mention it broadly, rather than simply hint at it or just let a few folk know.

As of the end of the month, I’ll be leaving my very cool and amazing world-class family at Apple retail and joining the team at the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta.

It wasn’t an easy decision, leaving the industry-leading unique culture of Apple retail. But it basically boiled down to lifestyle; I wanted my weekends and evenings back to spend time with my family.

I leave with very fond memories. Apple is an amazing organization. I consider it a personal privilege that I was able to learn and grow within, and perhaps help influence and contribute to the growth others.

Yes, I’ll miss the people and the unique Apple culture.

In my new role at the Alberta School of Business, I’ll be working with the marketing and communications teams to bring my social media, PR and communications knowledge to bear on the School’s strategic plans. Similar to what I’ve done with the AMA, Empire Avenue and BioWare.

So, yes, bittersweet, and full of promise and excitement!

I can’t wait!

A sidenote: it’s very cool when the Dean of the school follows you on LinkedIn and you’ve not even started yet! Reassuring, in fact.

WeeklyBeats7 – Cold Night

Cover for my latest submission to WeeklyBeats 2014. Wanted to go for an atmospheric sound again, something more ambient. Maybe this worked. Maybe not, but it came out as a complete unit. Also tried sticking to a small ‘band’. In this case used instruments from SampleTank: Blue Phaser electric piano, Xpander Phat synth pad, Cosmic Pad synth pad, and Minimoog echo 2 synth lead.

Also brought in some Abstract Atmosphere 50 from Garageband — which I used as my DAW.

Image is from something I took out the window a bunch of years ago. Loved the light pillars in the minus 40 weather.
