Elk Island Park is now a Dark Sky Preserve, a place where the nocturnal environment is protected as part of Alberta’s and Canada’s natural and cultural heritage.
The new Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve was announced September 3 by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada along with Parks Canada and Alberta Community Development at Elk Island National Park’s “Many Cultures, One Sky” event. This is the second dark sky preserve in Alberta.
“The Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve will enhance visitors’ experience and appreciation for the parks in new ways,” said Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright on behalf of Rona Ambrose, Federal Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada. “Through the efforts of everyone involved, we open the door for new interpretive and educational programs and present visitors with a pristine night-time sky to enjoy.”
“Local astronomers are excited about the recognition and protection of the dark skies over Alberta,” said Scott D. Young, President of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. “In addition to encouraging environmental integrity, this designation raises public awareness of light pollution and preserves natural starlit skies close to Edmonton.”
