After reading news and blogfeeds, some great, some not-so, a collegue challenged me to take a serious look at what I read most often, and why. This was interesting, and I thought I’d share the results.
So here they are, at least, these are the ones that I read regularly. As I made the list, I realised more than five fought for my attention, but since the challenge was for five, I’ll list my favorites first. The others fall into the runner-up category, I guess ![]()
One thing you’ll find about many of them, they’re not the ones that ‘everyone thinks are the best’ or that ‘I think I should be reading because they’re the party favorites’. These are ones that I scan daily, click on regularly, and generally enjoy reading. Read more

Serious Games ” Alberta gets serious.
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
I’ve always been interested in simulations…flight simulators, strategy games…that sort of thing. It’s refreshing to see the digital media developers in the province finally get into it too, in a serious way.
I blogged about this yesterday over at CanuckTek, but thought it worthwhile to ping here too..it’s fun, seriously!
The Serious Games information sessions are precursors to the Serious Games Summit, October 30-31 in Washington DC.

Summer’s over. Rick’s Back. Yay!

Ah yes, the leaves are turning and Rick Mercer is back in fine form.
Speaking of the short bus I see that Jack Layton has distinguished himself on the international front by coming up with a solution for the Afghanistan situation. Jack is calling for peace talks with the Taliban. About time the NDP get back to their more loony roots. For a while there they were coming off all semi-sensible.

National Park gets a new designation: Canada’s latest Dark Sky Preserve.
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
Elk Island Park is now a Dark Sky Preserve, a place where the nocturnal environment is protected as part of Alberta’s and Canada’s natural and cultural heritage.
The new Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve was announced September 3 by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada along with Parks Canada and Alberta Community Development at Elk Island National Park’s “Many Cultures, One Sky” event. This is the second dark sky preserve in Alberta.
“The Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve will enhance visitors’ experience and appreciation for the parks in new ways,” said Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright on behalf of Rona Ambrose, Federal Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada. “Through the efforts of everyone involved, we open the door for new interpretive and educational programs and present visitors with a pristine night-time sky to enjoy.”
“Local astronomers are excited about the recognition and protection of the dark skies over Alberta,” said Scott D. Young, President of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. “In addition to encouraging environmental integrity, this designation raises public awareness of light pollution and preserves natural starlit skies close to Edmonton.”
