For a while I’ve been trying to find a good technology website that looks at things from a Canadian perspective. Something like Gizmodo, or Cool Hunting, ars technica or even boingboing.
Nada.
So, with that in mind, we’ve launched CanuckTek - Canadian technology news and opinion. Currently we have a small staff, and an even smaller budget, so we’re looking for news. If you have something you think we should know about, then let us know: canucktek*at*gmail*dot*com.

Something this cool just needs to be seen.
What is it? An animated series of light-painted time exposures, of course. This has to be difficult. If I had some free time, I would try it.
More awesome light-art at PIKAPIKA.

I’ve been reading ebooks on my Palm Zire 31 for a year and a bit…but not thought about listing the resources I use. Well, here’s the first step — and I didn’t have to do much of the work either thanks to this great link from David Dean. He lists five, I’ve grabbed three, but check out the comments on his post…even more great resources there.
- Baen Free Library - free - here you can get 80+ free full length books. This is intended to get
you hooked so you’ll start paying by the month (see number 4). - Cory Doctorow - free - Cory has released all his recent stories and novels under Creative Commons
licenses so you can download away. However, Cory is probably even more useful because he finds out when other authors do similar and lets everyone know through his blogging at Boing Boing, so keep an eye there. - Strange Horizons - no cost - a weekly web-based magazine of and about speculative fictionÂ. Every week they have more fiction available, as well as articles, reviews, poetry and art. They don’t seem to have any syndication feeds, so I created one here.

Another way of saying ‘You can’t get those hours back’.

Recently I’ve been challenged by too many meetings and not enough stimulating work. What’s a guy to do. One of my regular reads – The Lazy Way to Success — recently dropped this interesting tidbit into my lap. In turn, I pass on the favour.
…When we focus on money, no matter how much we think we need it or want it, it is an empty focus. We are focusing on a fruit we have no control over. In fact, focusing intently on money (or any fruit) is a retarding focus because it drains us of our power. When our focus is on the fruits, Nature isn’t impressed, isn’t amused, and isn’t inspired to be generous….
My take…you can’t get back the time you’ve spent in less-than-worthwhile activities. Where you can, avoid them, and focus on the worthwhile ones. Simple to say, and very very hard to do.

St. Francis de Sales
The enemy often tries to make us attempt and start many projects so that we will be overwhelmed with too many tasks, and therefore achieve nothing and leave everything unfinished. Sometimes he even suggests the wish to undertake some excellent work that he foresees we will never accomplish. This is to distract us from the prosecution of some less excellent work that we would have easily completed. He does not care how many plans and beginnings we make, provided nothing is finished.

We don’t need no steenkin’ Windows - eWeek labs reviews Ubuntu 6.06
Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off
Not really a suprise to me, though I’m no Linux guru, just a user who upgraded from Red Hat 3.04 through to Ubuntu 6.06. I must say, it is a very nice alternate environment. eWeek Labs recently awarded Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS an Analysts Choice award.
This latest Ubuntu release, which became available in June, has won our ardor with a tight focus on desktop usability; an extremely active, helpful and organized user community; and a software installation and management framework that’s unsurpassed on any OS platform.
In addition to outperforming Linux rivals as a desktop OS, we found that Ubuntu is a solid choice for server deploymentsâprovided, at least, that the sort of graphical management hand-holding that one would expect from Microsoft’s Windows Server or from Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server isn’t a priority.
Of course, Ubuntu Linux is free. In fact, Canonical will even ship you professionally packaged discs to install and distribute to your friends. These are ‘Live’ discs that will run from the CD-rom, not touching your precious hard drive, unless you choose to install the operating system. Ubuntu Linux is available in x86, x86-64 and PowerPC versions.
My one qualm with the current distro is that It won’t load/recognize the wi-fi driver for my HP/Compaq laptop. Since it’s a reasonably common unit, I’m sure there will be a patch/fix/how-to that will overcome this issue.
So, nothing to do this rainy, August long weekend, then why not grab a copy of Ubuntu and check it out for yourself!
