Welcome! You appear to be new here (or you've reset your cookies recently). If you're new here, you may want to browse around a bit and find out what the site is about. I encourage you to register for the RSS feed or to receive updates through email. Thanks for visiting!
We spend countless hours working with our computer, creating value and storing it to this fragile spinning disc called a Hard Drive. What happens when thing go bad.
Hopefully, you’ll have tried out the new, free, backup service called Mozy. You get 2+ GB of storage for your backups. Simply download the client, set up the schedule and drives (no networked drives allowed, local only) and then your data is safe.
I’m trying it out now..not that I’ve ever needed to restore from backup, but hey, you never know.
The 2+GB storage is interesting…it’s an incentive to get you to spread the word (like I’m doing here). This referral plan gives you more backup space for everyone that you refer to the site. In my case, should you want to try it out (and help me out at the same time) use this code:

Social Networking goes to the Dogs!
Filed Under Web | Comments Off
Dogster.com (think Friendster.com) is an interesting little site that caters to the dog-lover in all of us.
The concept is one of posting a bio of your dog, including photos..etc. Then, other Dogster members become your puppies pals, leave bones..etc. Each pooch then develops its own virtual community. Yes, Heloise and Selena both have their own pages.
We are dog freaks and computer geeks who wanted a canine sharing
application that’s truly gone to the dogs. Such a site didn’t exist, so
we built it ourselves. The fluffy love is backed with serious
technology and years of coding experience under our collars. Dogster
has since become more contagious than kennel cough. Since launching in January 2004, Dogster.com (and it’s sister site
Catster.com launched in June, 2004) have become the fastest growing pet
destination on the internet and are now a top-five overall pet
destination. Now serving over 650,000 photos for over 155,000 uploaded
pets by 125,000 members, Dogster and Catster serve more than 10 million
pages a month to over half a million visitors. You can see more
staggering stats on our home and statster pages.
Not a bad way to learn a bit about a particular breed before you commit to including a dog in your family. But not the only way either. Make sure you do your research before you get your dog. You and your new dog will both benefit.

Interesting article (via Micro Persuasion) about the mainstream growth and acceptance of Social Networking media (websites). It seems that even the venerable NHL is getting into the action with a public beta.
Aaron Cohen, CEO of Bolt Media, which runs social networking and content sharing site Bolt.com, said that online social networks are the realm of the younger generation. For that reason, he’s uncertain whether they’ll flourish in niches like hockey and politics, which appeal to a broader age range. “Social media really, really skews young, for now,” he said, adding: “If you ask most people who are over 30 if they’re member of a social network, they’ll say no.”
So, is social media the way of the interweb? Could be. I know of several organizations that have made significant inroads using the power of the community. Some, like CambrianHouse, even have it as the basis as their business model!

Anti-DRM Bed-time story book — via BoingBoing
Filed Under Blogging | Comments Off
No matter where you sit on the DRM issue in Canada, this book is entertaining.
Just then, Duck came bounding up the road. She was covered from head to toe in sticky, gooey apple sauce.“Yoooooou stinky Pig!” yelled Duck.
“What happened to YOU?” gasped Pig.
“My baby duckling tried to eat an apple for snack time, and ALL THE APPLES EXPLODED! Why can’t I share the apples with my family, Pig?”
“Oh…” said Pig.
In the spirit of sharing, the author has released it into the wild with a Creative Commons licence. Feel free to download and share.

Interesting read. ArsTechnica has an article/review about Microsoft’s Virtual PC, now available free. Why would you want to set up another PC on your existing PC? Check out new operating systems, experiment, play…who knows.
I run a Ubuntu server for the home, on a stand-alone box. The article talks about installing Ubuntu desktop on a PC…takes about 3 hours, but at the end of the day, you’ve got a computer that will run another OS within the windows environment.
Is it better than creating a dual-boot PC? Likely. This way, you don’t really have to work at the hardware layer — formatting and partitioning your HD to support multiple OS. I’m tempted to try it out.

Occasionally, I notice on some of the blogs I read a list of links the author found interesting for various reasons. Maybe it’s just a handy place for them to keep things for future reference (though I find del.icio.us much better at that sort of thing).
Regardless, it can make sense to have them if you categorize the links. Or if you really find them interesting, but don’t have the time to create a whole blog post about them.
So, here’s a first shot at it. I think it’ll be infrequent.
